Gameweek 7 hands the armband back to the obvious man. The deadline is Saturday 17 October, 10:00 UTC, the first ball is kicked at 11:30 UTC when Everton host Chelsea, and the fixture computer has at last been kind to the game’s priciest asset: Manchester City are at home to Ipswich Town, a fixture difficulty of 2, and Erling Haaland is six goals into his season.
Gameweek 6 was a week for the cautious, and caution paid. This one is much the same — except that the safe pick and the smart pick have finally converged. Look past the captain, though, and there is real value on the board: Brighton are the form team in the game, Manchester City’s supporting cast is absurdly cheap for the returns it produces, and there is one very expensive name — owned by more than one manager in five — that the numbers say you should sell, not buy.
The fixture board
| Fixture | Difficulty | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Man City vs Ipswich | 2 vs 5 | Haaland, Cherki and Gvardiol host the softest fixture of the week |
| Brighton vs Crystal Palace | 2 vs 4 | Groß, De Cuyper and Verbruggen — the form spine of FPL |
| Fulham vs Hull | 2 vs 3 | The Londoners’ kindest home game of the first quarter |
| Tottenham vs Coventry | 2 vs 3 | Spurs’ soft landing on Monday night — but their treatment room is filling up |
| Leeds vs Man Utd | 4 vs 3 | Cunha carries his form to Elland Road, where the visitors are rated a 3 |
| Nott’m Forest vs Arsenal | 4 vs 3 | The champions travel; Calafiori and Saka go to the City Ground |
| Brentford vs Liverpool | 4 vs 3 | Liverpool away at a Brentford side that has started the season well |
| Newcastle vs Aston Villa | 3 vs 3 | Midweek European legs on both sides |
| Everton vs Chelsea | 4 vs 3 | João Pedro’s 70% ownership walks into a difficulty of 3 on the road |
| Bournemouth vs Sunderland | 3 vs 3 | Brobbey’s form meets a Bournemouth defence still finding its feet |
The captaincy call
Erling Haaland (£15.6m, 45 points, six goals in six starts, form 6.0, 75.5% owned) is the field — and, for once, also the argument. Manchester City host Ipswich at a difficulty of 2, and no premium asset will see a softer home fixture all autumn. Haaland has scored in every game he has started, sits on 4.8 expected goals, and this is precisely the fixture the £15.6m price tag was built for.
João Pedro (£7.8m, 45 points, nine points per start, 70.5%) is the only player level with him on points, and Chelsea’s striker has been the season’s revelation: five goals and three assists in five starts. But his fixture is Everton away, rated a 3, and the armband does not travel as well as it sits at home.
The form shout is Brighton’s Pascal Groß (£6.0m, 53 points, form 10.0, 40.6%) — the joint-highest scorer in the game, at home to Crystal Palace at a difficulty of 2. If you have spent the season captaining on form rather than on price, Groß is your reward.
The desk’s call: Haaland. With 75.5% ownership the armband is rank protection as much as a points decision — but this week it is not a compromise. City should score three. The differential captains are Groß and Semenyo, both also at a difficulty of 2.
Best picks by position
Goalkeepers. Verbruggen (£4.6m, 32 points, four clean sheets, form 7.5, 22.1%) is the value play of the week: Brighton’s stopper is at home to Palace at a difficulty of 2 and owns more clean sheets than any goalkeeper in the game. Donnarumma (£5.5m, 28 points, 7.6%) is the same idea at City — home to Ipswich, and owned by barely one manager in thirteen. Raya (£6.1m, 33 points, 43.7%) remains the set-and-forget premium, away at Forest. Tzolakis (£4.7m, 36 points, 13.7%) is still the cheapest reliable starter in the game, though Hull travel to Fulham.
Defenders. Start with De Cuyper (£5.1m, 53 points, form 10.5, 36.5%): Brighton’s full-back is the joint-highest scorer in FPL, with two goals and three assists, and he hosts Palace at a difficulty of 2. The rebuilt bonus system was written for exactly this profile. Gvardiol (£5.8m, 41 points, four assists, 28.3%) is the City route at a difficulty of 2. Calafiori (£5.9m, 38 points, 52.6%) is the most-owned defender in the game and the cheapest reliable way into the champions’ back line, though Arsenal travel to Forest. Vuskovic (£5.1m, 40 points, form 8.0, 4.8%) is the differential version of De Cuyper — same defence, same fixture, one manager in twenty. And note the counter-signal: Tarkowski (£6.2m, 46 points, 18.4%) and Bogle (£4.7m, 43 points, 9.1%) are the second- and third-highest-scoring defenders in the game, but Everton host Chelsea and Leeds host United, both at a difficulty of 4. Hold both; buy neither this week.
Midfielders. Groß is the pick of the round. Cherki (£7.9m, 44 points, four goals and two assists, form 9.0, 33.1%) is the City upgrade on any £6m midfielder: home to Ipswich, and averaging 7.3 points per start. Semenyo (£8.3m, 36 points, form 10.0, 14.0%) is the cut-price version of the same fixture, owned by one manager in seven. Cunha (£7.9m, 36 points, form 10.0, 6.5%) carries United’s form to Elland Road. Below £7m the value still holds: Belloumi (£5.2m, 37 points, 7.7%) away at Fulham, and Tavernier (£6.1m, 32 points, 7.3%) at home to Sunderland.
Forwards. Haaland is the anchor. João Pedro is the obvious second, though his fixture is not soft. Kostoulas (£5.7m, 29 points, 8.8%) is the cheap Brighton route at a difficulty of 2, and Brobbey (£5.7m, 24 points, form 8.5, 5.1%) is the form differential up front, away at Bournemouth. Avoid the flag-carriers: Isak (thigh, no return date) is out, and Emersonn (£5.6m, 28 points, 3.9%) walks into a difficulty of 5 at the Etihad.
Differentials worth a flutter
| Player | Pos | Club | Price | Pts | Form | Owned | GW7 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vuskovic | DEF | Brighton | £5.1m | 40 | 8.0 | 4.8% | CRY (H) 2 |
| Cunha | MID | Man Utd | £7.9m | 36 | 10.0 | 6.5% | LEE (A) 3 |
| Semenyo | MID | Man City | £8.3m | 36 | 10.0 | 14.0% | IPS (H) 2 |
| Brobbey | FWD | Sunderland | £5.7m | 24 | 8.5 | 5.1% | BOU (A) 3 |
| Belloumi | MID | Hull | £5.2m | 37 | 5.0 | 7.7% | FUL (A) 3 |
| Donnarumma | GK | Man City | £5.5m | 28 | 5.5 | 7.6% | IPS (H) 2 |
| Dasilva | DEF | Coventry | £4.0m | 25 | 10.0 | 1.1% | TOT (A) 3 |
Vuskovic at 4.8% is the pick of the table — a genuine differential only because he shares a defence with the game’s joint-top scorer and nobody has noticed. Brobbey at 5.1% is the real gamble: Sunderland’s striker has three goals and a form figure of 8.5, and almost nobody owns him.
One to avoid: Gabriel, the £7.9m name with the £4.5m output
Gabriel (£7.9m, 27 points, form 1.5, 21.7% owned) is the most expensive defender on the board, and he has not justified it for a month. No goals, no assists, three clean sheets and just 27 points in six games — fewer points than Coventry’s £4.0m defender Thomas, for almost double the money. Arsenal travel to Nottingham Forest at a difficulty of 3, and the overhauled bonus system has made life harder, not easier, for centre-backs who earn their points from clearances and blocks. If you own him, this is the week to shop the downgrade: Calafiori has a goal and two assists for £2.0m less.
And a wider caution. Calvert-Lewin (£6.0m, 24 points, form 2.0, 22.6%) is the most-owned forward nobody is talking about, and Leeds host United at a difficulty of 4. Everton’s defence — Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko — is among the best in the game, but it hosts Chelsea this weekend; wait a week. And Ipswich’s cheap double-act of Emersonn and Davis walk into Manchester City at a difficulty of 5.
Bottom line
Captain Haaland at home to Ipswich and spend the rest of your budget where the fixtures are soft, not where the badges are big. Build from the board: De Cuyper, Gvardiol and Calafiori in defence; Groß, Cherki and Semenyo through midfield; João Pedro or Kostoulas alongside Haaland up front; Verbruggen or Donnarumma in goal. If you want to gain ground rather than hold it, Vuskovic and Brobbey are the low-owned names with the form to do it — and Gabriel is the expensive one to fade.
