Gameweek 8 arrives with a deadline that catches people out: Friday 23 October, 17:30 UTC, ninety minutes before Ipswich Town host Nottingham Forest. Set the alarm now.
Gameweek 7 sorted the season into tiers. Brighton put five past Crystal Palace — a fifth win in seven, twenty-three goals scored and five conceded, from four different scorers. City beat Ipswich 3-2 and still conceded twice to a side without a clean sheet all season. Arsenal won 1-0 at Forest and have conceded five in seven, level with Brighton. Chelsea won 2-0 at Everton through two goals from Neto, a player almost nobody owns.
So Brighton are the best attack, Arsenal the meanest defence, City the best team, and Chelsea the most entertaining mess — seventeen scored, thirteen conceded, one clean sheet. This week that mess gets the softest fixture on the board.
The fixture board
| Fixture | Difficulty | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Ipswich vs Nott’m Forest | 3 vs 2 | Forest’s best fixture of the quarter, but they have five goals in seven |
| Aston Villa vs Man City | 4 vs 3 | City have won 4-1, 1-0 and 3-0 away; Haaland has four away goals |
| Arsenal vs Everton | 3 vs 5 | The meanest defence meets an Everton side rated a 5 away |
| Coventry vs Fulham | 2 vs 2 | The kindest pair of the week; Coventry have conceded 14 |
| Chelsea vs Tottenham | 2 vs 4 | Chelsea have scored 11 in three home games; Spurs have six goals all season |
| Crystal Palace vs Newcastle | 3 vs 3 | Little to see; Hall’s set pieces are the only angle |
| Hull vs Brentford | 3 vs 2 | Brentford travel to a Hull side with three clean sheets |
| Liverpool vs Brighton | 3 vs 4 | The form team’s hardest trip, though Anfield has one clean sheet in three |
| Man Utd vs Bournemouth | 3 vs 4 | United have conceded in all seven; Bournemouth’s attackers are live |
| Sunderland vs Leeds | 3 vs 3 | Bogle and Calvert-Lewin carry Leeds’ form; Brobbey is a 75% flag |
The captaincy call
Erling Haaland (£15.7m, 58 points, eight goals, form 9.5, 77.1% owned) is the field, and again he is the argument. The worry is the venue: Villa Park, difficulty 3, a side that just won at Newcastle. The worry does not survive the data. City have played three away games and scored eight — 4-1 at Palace, 1-0 at Old Trafford, 3-0 at Anfield. Haaland has four goals at home and four away, 5.7 expected goals, twelve bonus points (the most of any forward) and a goal in six straight games. Villa have conceded eleven in seven.
João Pedro (£7.9m, 47 points, five goals and three assists, 73.2%) is the closest rival. Chelsea host Tottenham at a difficulty of 2, and their home games have produced 4-3, 2-2 and 5-1 — eleven goals in three matches. João Pedro has four of his five goals and two of his three assists at Stamford Bridge. On fixture alone, he is the best captain on the board.
Cole Palmer (£9.8m, 38 points, two goals and four assists, 27.4%) is the same argument at a third of the ownership: same fixture, £2.0m cheaper than Bruno Fernandes, and five points better off. If you are chasing rather than protecting, he is the armband that moves you.
The desk’s call: Haaland. Eight goals in seven, the best away record in the league behind him, and 77.1% ownership makes the armband rank protection as well as a points decision. But this is the first week where the alternative is genuinely close, and João Pedro is a defensible captain — not a punt.
Best picks by position
Goalkeepers. Raya (£6.1m, 42 points, four clean sheets, 44.8%) is the pick: Arsenal have conceded five in seven and host an Everton side rated a 5 away with eight goals all season. Tzolakis (£4.7m, 39 points, 14.1%) remains the cheapest reliable starter and Hull are at home to Brentford. Verbruggen (£4.6m, 38 points, five clean sheets, 22.6%) is the value keeper of the season, but Brighton go to Liverpool — start him, do not buy him. The new bonus system rewards saves from inside the box; Tzolakis has 26 of them.
Defenders. Start with Calafiori (£6.0m, 44 points, a goal and two assists, form 7.5, 54.3%) — the most-owned defender in the game and the cheapest way into one of the two meanest defences, at home to Everton. White (£5.4m, 32 points, two assists, 4.3%) is the differential version of the same bet. Gvardiol (£5.8m, 41 points, a goal and four assists, 27.9%) is the City route, though the fixture is a 3. The counter-signals matter: Tarkowski (£6.2m, 46 points) and Bogle (£4.7m, 45 points) are the third- and fourth-highest scorers in the position, but Everton go to Arsenal at a difficulty of 5 and Leeds go to Sunderland — hold both. Gabriel (£7.9m, 35 points, no goals, no assists) is carried by clean sheets alone, while Calafiori costs £1.9m less with three attacking returns.
Midfielders. Palmer and Rogers (£8.0m, 40 points, four goals, 48.7%) are the Chelsea double-up into the week’s softest home fixture. Mbeumo (£7.9m, 41 points, four goals, 4.0 expected goals, form 8.0, 21.1%) is the form pick at a United side that has conceded in all seven. Rice (£7.3m, 36 points, four assists, form 8.0, 11.6%) is the quiet Arsenal engine, and he made the winner at Forest. Tavernier (£6.2m, 42 points, four goals, ten bonus, 11.0%) is the Bournemouth half of the Old Trafford fixture. Hold Groß (£6.2m, 58 points, three goals and six assists, 45.8%): Brighton’s away record is excellent, but Anfield is their hardest trip yet.
Forwards. Haaland and João Pedro are the two best forwards in the game; both start. Isak (£9.0m, 42 points, five goals, 13.4%) has scored four of his five away and now faces a Brighton side that has conceded five all season — a hold, not a buy. Evanilson (£6.1m, 37 points, two goals and four assists, form 9.5, 4.9%) is the value route into that United defence. Avoid the misfires: Calvert-Lewin (£6.1m, 33 points, 23.8%) walks into Arsenal at a difficulty of 5, and Gyökeres (£7.0m, four points in 80 minutes) is not yet a starter.
Differentials worth a flutter
| Player | Pos | Club | Price | Pts | Form | Owned | GW8 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Neto | MID | Chelsea | £6.5m | 34 | 10.0 | 3.0% | TOT (H) 2 |
| Evanilson | FWD | Bournemouth | £6.1m | 37 | 9.5 | 4.9% | MUN (A) 4 |
| White | DEF | Arsenal | £5.4m | 32 | 5.5 | 4.3% | EVE (H) 3 |
| Iwobi | MID | Fulham | £5.4m | 29 | 7.5 | 1.2% | COV (A) 2 |
| Castagne | DEF | Fulham | £4.5m | 28 | 4.0 | 1.2% | COV (A) 2 |
| Henderson | MID | Chelsea | £4.9m | 23 | 10.5 | 1.3% | TOT (H) 2 |
Neto at 3.0% is the pick of the table: two goals at Everton last week, a form figure of 10.0, and the Tottenham defence that has conceded ten in seven — for £3.3m less than Palmer. Iwobi and Castagne are the Coventry-fixture double, and Iwobi scored the winner against Hull. Henderson (£4.9m, two goals and an assist in 270 minutes) is a bench enabler outscoring most £7m midfielders per minute.
One to avoid: Kinsky and the Spurs clean-sheet trap
Kinsky (£4.5m, 23 points, two clean sheets, 15.0% owned, zero bonus points) is one of the most popular cheap goalkeepers in the game, and this is the week that popularity becomes a liability. Tottenham have scored six goals in seven, conceded ten and sit sixteenth. They travel to a Chelsea side that has scored eleven in three home games. Kinsky has played every minute for two clean sheets; this is the least likely shutout on the board.
The wider caution is the whole Tottenham block. Porro (£5.3m, nine points in 198 minutes) is expected back from a hamstring injury on 24 October — a reason to wait a week, not buy — and Solanke (£5.8m, 18 points, 1.5%) has one goal and one assist all season.
Two flags. Saka (£9.6m, 37 points, 14.1%) is at a 50% chance of playing with a thigh injury: a hold if he starts, not a buy at that price. And Semenyo (£8.3m, 10.6%), recommended here a week ago, now has a knee injury with no return date.
Bottom line
Captain Haaland — City’s away record and his even home-away split make Villa Park a venue, not an obstacle — then take the Chelsea fixture seriously everywhere else. João Pedro, Palmer and Rogers are the core; Raya, Calafiori and White the defence; Mbeumo and Rice the midfield value; Evanilson the cheap forward who funds the rest. To gain ground, Neto at 3.0% is the name. To protect it, sell Kinsky before Chelsea do the protecting for you.
Read the fixture, not the badge. That is how the commentary desk calls it.
